President Johnson Delivering Remarks at Marshall Swearing-In

This photograph is of President Lyndon B. Johnson delivering remarks on the occasion of federal judge Thurgood Marshall's swearing-in as the first African-American Solicitor General. The event took place in the Cabinet Room of the White House on August 24, 1965. Marshall would go on to become a Supreme Court Justice in 1967. Photographed alongside Marshall are his wife, Cecilia Marshall, and children, Thurgood Marshall Jr. and John W. Marshall.
